vanilla ice cream spaghetti, raspberry coulis, almond shavings, whipped cream @ ice + slice

The Silly Season was uncharacteristically cool this year in Sydney.  We all thought we’d escaped the dreaded heatwave that comes a-knocking each and every Christmas.  Bad luck.  Now that the tinsel has been packed away and compulsive credit card swiping has ceased, the Sticky Season has officially begun.  That’s right, Sydney summer may have been a little delayed this year but it sure as hell has arrived.  Men with sweaty backs, teenagers with lobster red burns (at least it’s cheaper than a chemical peel), neighbours climbing over their fences to steal a quick dip in the pool next door.

Having endured Sydney’s hottest week on record, fortunately there is some relief to be had under the scorching sun.  You scream, I scream, we all scream… well you get the idea.  None of this trans-fatty, hydrogenated stuff… although I can’t truthfully deny rumours that I threw myself in front of the Mr. Whippy van in the summer of ’03.

I’m talking about hard-core ice ice [cream] baby: gelato and sorbetto, or as the French say, glace and sorbet.

watch out for the tripping ceiling cow @ wowcow

The laborious (?) work has all been done for you… as a true frozen dessert addict, I’ve not left one decent ice cream bar unlicked.  It wasn’t easy, dear friends… on one particular occasion I found myself eating four ice creams in a row.  The sensible thing would have been to taste a little and then leave the rest for my hungry little ant-friends, but I just can’t stand to let good food go to waste (so it goes to my waist instead).  It’s my father’s fault, we never were allowed to leave the table without finishing everything on our plate.

So invest in a two dollar portable fan and befriend any individual who has a backyard pool/ air conditioning (good luck finding a spare patch of sand at the beach).  And while you lavish in your ice cream oasis, take a moment to marvel at the wisdom of the ancient Chinese, whose inventiveness and foresight paved the way for glace geeks and sorbet suckers everywhere.

I can only imagine how hot it was for you in Sydney. I was SWELTERING near Brisbane for three weeks in January. 🙂 Love all these fabulous ice cream flavors and am thoroughly craving a spoonful of each even though it’s freezing outside. 🙂

Oh for some reason I get horrendous ice cream cravings when the temperature drops… I think I single-handedly kept the Sydney ice cream scene in business last winter 🙂

Haha I love it! And who knows, we might get another unexpected heatwave in which case it is the best excuse to grab some friends and do the same! 🙂

How fun! Thank you for doing the dirty work and trying all of those ice creams for us. I know it was difficult. You found some interesting flavors that I’d not heard of before. The black pearl looks particularly intriguing!

Bar Italia! ice+slice! gelatomassi! All favourites of mine with a great selection of flavours to boot. And it’s not just the sky high temps either – I’m happy to eat ice-cream in almost any kind of weather =D

Well, it isn’t summer here, Katie; but I’m ready for some ice cream after reading this post! I’ll have the coffee and vanilla sundae now, and the blood orange sorbet later in the day!

Here’s wishing you a day full of brain freezes and toothaches 😉 Enjoy!

Ha ha that’s pretty much what I did (the inner-west was particularly dangerous) and by the end of the day I had the “shakes” from my little sugar OD… Not that it would deter me from doing it again 😀

Great timing! I’m heading dowm to Sydney tommorow and will defintely be hitting some of these places. Hopefully there won’t be a heatwave though….

    Oh, that ice cream spaghetti…art.

That’s some hard core research you did there! All in the name of informing us all, of course. Some great flavours and combinations. Yumm. I have to say, for some reason I prefer ice cream in winter, but gelato and sorbets in summer.
